Fort Jesus is a fort built in 1593 by order of King Philip II of Spain, ruler Portuguese and Spanish Kingdoms. It is located on Mombasa Island, Kenya. Viewed from the air it has shape of a man with spread hands.
Between 1631 and 1875 the fort was won and lost nine times.Italian architect, Jao Batisto Cairato, Chief Architect for Portuguese possessions in the East, designed the fort. During the British rule of Kenya, it was a prison, In 1958 they converted it into a historical monument.
Today it houses a museum. As well as a tourist destination the Fort is important as a host for numerous research programmes, a Conservation Lab, and Education Department and an Old Town Conservation Office.
Mombasa, Kenya
Mombasa is the second largest city in Kenya, on the Indian Ocean. It is a major port and has an international airport. Mombasa is the centre of the tourism industry on the coast. In Kiswahili it is called Kisiwa Cha Mvita (Island of War), because of the many changes in its ownership. |
