It was founded in 1936 and it is one of the oldest in Europe.
I have nice childhood memories about it, and I had good time going there with my 3 years old daughter couple of months ago. But I also find very disturbing looking at big wild cats in only few meters long cages walking from one side to another and back.
It is an old-style city zoo where animals are crowded in small cages, with no conservation and education purposes.
After googling a little I found a few interesting facts:
- Belgrade Zoo is not a member of any global Zoo association.
- 20 hectares is a minimum for a zoo (european standards)
- Belgrade zoo only about 6 hectares.
- There are loads of individuals and organizations screaming about poor conditions in Belgrade Zoo.
